One of the primary objectives of the FOP is to provide sufficient legal defense for officers should the need arise. Legal defense protection is a necessity for law enforcement professionals today. As the frequency and cost of allegations rise, the FOP Legal Defense Plan offers a very affordable and comprehensive plan. The self-funded legal defense plan is only available to FOP groups and individual members. There are options for administrative, civil and criminal coverage.
The FOP aims to protect police officers during trying times. The FOP Legal Defense Plan is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Grand Lodge and operated by FOP Legal Plan, Inc. The plan pays for all reasonable and necessary attorney fees for on-duty claims. There are also options which can extend coverage for administrative off-duty claims. This plan works in excess of all other benefits, including defense provided by an employer.
***There is also coverage available for retired officers related to the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) of 2004 (H.R.218)
